The Haitian Protection Act Would Grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) To Haitians In United States

Alcee Hastings, a member of the United States House of Representatives representing Florida's 23rd congressional district, has introduced a bill that would designate Haiti as a country whose nationals and former residents living in the United States would be eligible for temporary protected status (TPS).

The bill provides that the “initial period of designation” for TPS would be 18 months.

The bill, H.R. 522, cites a long, compelling list of reasons why Haiti should be designated for TPS.

The bill notes that “there is a well-documented history of discrimination against Haitian nationals in the United States immigration process,” suggesting that when similar conditions to those currently prevailing in Haiti have arisen in other countries, those countries have been designated for TPS.

Suspending deportations would allow Haiti to spend its limited resources on economic and political reconstruction rather than on social services for deported people.

Re: TPS For Haitians

When Haiti applied in 2004 for TPS, it was turned down for undisclosed reasons.

The United States occasionally grants immigrants from countries in extreme economic or political turmoil "temporary protected status," or TPS, which means U.S. removals to those countries will stop for a specified period.

The designation is given to people from countries or parts of countries that have "ongoing armed conflicts", recent "environmental disasters" or other conditions that prevent nationals from being returned home safely.

Question:

Does anyone know why Haiti was denied TPS or what the current status is?

"Granting protected status to Haitians is a moral duty"
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/5min/story/717314.html

President Bush has nothing to lose by granting TPS to Haitians.

President Bush is not running for office, his popularity ratings tanked long ago, and he's always saying he's a compassionate conservative who doesn't look at polls but simply does what's right

The Bush administration has renewed TPS for Nicaraguans, Salvadorans and Hondurans, yet Haitians can't catch a break.
